Most new silk brands ask the same three questions before anything else: how much is a sample, how long will it take, and will the sample cost come back when we order bulk. This guide answers those questions the way a source factory actually handles them. OlaSilk is a B2B private label silk manufacturer in Qingdao, China, working with silk since 2010. Today we make sleep masks, bonnets, scrunchies, pillowcases and scarves in 100% Grade 6A mulberry silk, and the notes below come from real sample requests rather than a generic checklist. Use it to plan a sample round that answers your buying questions without paying for more than you need, whether you are a hair care or sleep brand preparing a retail launch, a spa or hotel buyer planning amenities, a company ordering branded gifts, or a wholesale distributor adding silk to a catalog.
What exactly are you paying for in a silk sample?
A sample fee is not one number. It is the sum of a few parts, and knowing the parts lets you decide which ones you actually need at this stage.
| Part of the sample fee | When it applies | What changes the cost |
|---|---|---|
| The sample product itself | Every sample | Product type, size, momme (16, 19, 22, 25 or 30) |
| Logo or label sampling | Only if you want your branding on the sample | Method: woven label, print or embroidery, and how many colors |
| Custom color or print strike-off | Only for a new dye color or your own artwork | Color matching or printing your file |
| Courier shipping | Every sample | Destination country and postal code |
Prices are quoted per style, because a sleep mask, a bonnet and a scarf use different amounts of fabric and labor. Shipping is quoted on top of the sample itself, based on your country and postal code, so include your full delivery address when you ask for a sample quote, and ask for each part to be shown on the quote.
Stock sample, custom sample, or sample with your logo?
Decide what the sample has to prove before you order it. Each level answers a different question and takes a different amount of work.
- Stock sample: an existing style in an existing color. It answers "what does the silk feel like, and is the sewing quality right?" This is the fastest and simplest option.
- Custom sample: your size, shape, color or print. It answers "will my design work in silk?" It takes longer because the factory sets up your specification.
- Sample with your logo: your woven label, print or embroidery added. It answers "will my brand look right on the product?" Label and logo setup usually adds time and may add a setup cost, so confirm both on the quote.
A practical approach for a first order is a stock sample to judge silk quality, then one custom sample with your logo once you are close to a decision. For stock-color styles such as sleep masks, bulk starts from 10 pieces, while a custom dyed Pantone color uses a higher dye-lot minimum; printed scarves are an exception and can be ordered from 1 piece. Ask about the minimum for your exact style before you choose a color direction.
How long does a sample take, and when does the clock start?
A stock sample is the quickest. Sample production usually takes about 7 working days; a sample with a new color, a custom logo or custom packaging usually takes longer, often 7 to 14 working days, and your sample quote confirms the timing for your style. Bulk production is a separate step: it is counted in working days from the day the sample is approved and the bulk deposit is received, and is usually about 25 working days depending on the product and how complex the customization is.
Sample timing is counted in working days from the day both of these are in place, whichever comes later:
- Payment for the sample has been received.
- Your color, size, logo method and logo position are confirmed, including the final logo file. Photos and screen colors cannot confirm the final shade or hand-feel of silk, so color and texture should be confirmed on the physical sample in daylight during your sample review, before bulk production starts. Courier transit time is added on top of production time, so plan the whole window, not only the making time.
How sample payment works
Samples are paid in full before production starts. This is standard for custom work: the factory prepares fabric and, where applicable, trims and label or print setup specifically for your sample. Pay only through the payment details on your proforma invoice or through our official company payment link, not through account details typed in an email.
- ✓Product and style (sleep mask, bonnet, scrunchie, pillowcase or scarf)
- ✓Momme you want to compare, for example 19 and 22
- ✓Color: a stock color number, or a Pantone reference for a custom color
- ✓Logo file and the method you are considering, if you want branding on the sample
- ✓Packaging needs, if you want to see packaging at the sample stage
- ✓Full delivery address including postal code, for the courier quote
Can the sample cost be credited against a bulk order?
Often, yes, but it depends on the order. The credit, if any, applies to the sample product cost, not to the courier shipping, which is not credited. Whether a credit applies, and the order size that triggers it, is confirmed case by case and written on your sample invoice, so you know before you pay rather than after.
Ask these questions when you receive a sample quote:
- Is any part of this sample cost credited if we place a bulk order?
- What bulk order size or value is needed for the credit to apply?
- Can the credit condition be written on the sample invoice?
How to keep sample cost low without skipping important checks
- Compare options in one parcel. If you are choosing between two momme weights or two colors, sample them together and confirm the combined shipping cost on your quote.
- Sample the risky part only. If the silk quality is already proven on a stock sample, a second round may only need your logo, not a whole new style.
- Lock decisions before you pay. Color, size, logo method and logo position should be fixed before the sample starts, because a change after cutting may need a new sample.
- Ask for the bulk path at the same time. Knowing the bulk minimum, packaging options and production time now can reduce the risk of a second sample later.
When you approve a sample, confirm in writing that bulk will use the same fabric specification: fiber, momme, weave and color reference. For reference, our fabric is certified to OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100, and OlaSilk is ISO 9001 certified and a Sedex Supplier Plus member.
When you are ready, send your sample request with the product, momme, color, logo file, any packaging needs and your delivery address, and we will reply with a sample quote and confirm the next steps.
FAQ
How much does a custom silk sample cost?
It is quoted per style and depends on the product, momme, any logo or color setup, and courier shipping to your address. Ask for each part to be shown on the quote.
